Summer can stay on the winter shelf
Preservation words distinguish processes, finished foods, household labor, and seasonality
What to notice
Квасити refers to fermenting foods such as cabbage or cucumbers through a souring process. Маринувати points to marinating or pickling in a prepared liquid, while консервувати is a broader verb for canning or preserving. Сушити means drying, and варити варення means making jam or preserves.
Finished-food vocabulary is equally useful. Квашена капуста is fermented cabbage; соління is a broad everyday category for salted or pickled vegetables; варення is fruit preserve or jam. Recipes and terminology can overlap in household speech, so the card should teach core distinctions without pretending to certify every jar.
Preservation historically helps extend seasonal food, reduce waste, and store harvests. Today, people may preserve at home, buy from a market or supermarket, exchange jars with relatives, use a freezer, or avoid the work entirely.
The labor should remain visible. Washing, cutting, sterilizing, lifting, labeling, and storing take time and skill. A cheerful cultural illustration should not quietly assign that work to grandmothers or women, nor imply that homemade is morally superior to purchased food.
