What question does the instrumental answer?
The instrumental answers Ким? and Чим?: with whom, with what, by what means, or as what.
This is the case of tools, company, and role. It appears when something is done with an object, when you are together with someone, when you travel by a means of transport, and in many identity patterns after бути or стати.
What it does in real speech
The instrumental appears when:
- a noun follows з in the sense of with
- a tool or means is used without a preposition
- a language or manner is named after verbs like говорити
- a person or role appears after patterns like бути or стати
That makes it a practical case for restaurants, directions, introductions, and everyday descriptions of how something happens.
Main endings
Some high-value beginner shifts look like this:
| Noun family | Common singular shift | Example |
|---|---|---|
| hard masculine / neuter | often adds -ом or -ем | автобус -> автобусом, лікар -> лікарем |
| feminine in -а | often changes to -ою or -ею | кава -> кавою, ручка -> ручкою |
| з + noun accompaniment | the noun changes because it now means with | друг -> другом |
Core phrase patterns
| UA | Translit | EN | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Кава з молоком. | kava z molokom | Coffee with milk. | з plus instrumental often marks accompaniment or what is added to something. |
| Я з другом. | ya z druhom | I am with a friend. | The companion after з moves into instrumental. |
| Я їду автобусом. | ya yidu avtobusom | I am going by bus. | Instrumental can mark the means of transport with no preposition. |
| Я пишу ручкою. | ya pyshu ruchkoiu | I am writing with a pen. | This is the classic tool pattern: the thing you use takes instrumental. |
| ? | vy hovoryte anhliiskoiu | Do you speak English? | Language after говорити often appears in instrumental too. |
| Я хочу бути лікарем. | ya khochu buty likarem | I want to be a doctor. | Identity after бути or стати often shifts into instrumental outside the simplest present-tense naming pattern. |
Common mix-ups
- Do not keep the noun in nominative after з when the meaning is with. з друг is wrong; з другом is the pattern you want.
- Do not confuse the two jobs of з. з другом uses instrumental for with, but з Лондона uses genitive for from.
- Do not assume instrumental always needs a preposition. Transport and tool patterns often use it directly.
- Do not over-apply the nominative identity pattern from Це лікар. Past, future, or become-style identity structures often move to instrumental.
Quick drill
- Read Кава з молоком. and Я з другом. so the companion or added-thing pattern with з becomes easy to spot.
- Say Я їду автобусом. and Я пишу ручкою. to hear instrumental as a means or tool without a preposition.
- Compare Це лікар. with Я хочу бути лікарем. so you can hear when identity stays nominative and when it shifts.
- Use the next Mova session to notice one з + noun phrase and one transport or tool phrase before moving on.
The instrumental feels much less abstract once you hear it as the case of how, with what, or with whom something happens. Open Mova and practice the fixed patterns until the endings start sounding like part of the phrase instead of extra grammar work.
