What do the locative and vocative answer?
The locative answers Де?: where. The vocative does not answer a normal content question at all. It marks who you are speaking to directly.
These two cases are special for different reasons. The locative only appears after a preposition such as в / у, на, or по. The vocative appears only when you greet, call, or address a person by name or title.
What they do in real speech
The locative and vocative show up when:
- you describe static location after в / у or на
- you use fixed bundles like по телефону
- you greet or call someone directly
- you want names and titles to sound naturally Ukrainian instead of borrowed from English structure
That means this article sits at the intersection of place language and social language: where something is, and who you are talking to.
Main endings
Some high-value beginner shifts look like this:
| Case | Common singular shift | Example |
|---|---|---|
| locative, most nouns | often changes to -і after в / у or на | Лондон -> у Лондоні, готель -> у готелі |
| locative, some masculine place nouns | often changes to -у | парк -> у парку |
| vocative, hard masculine | often changes to -е | Іван -> Іване, пан -> пане |
| vocative, soft masculine or feminine in -а | often changes to -ю or -о | Андрій -> Андрію, Оксана -> Оксано |
Core phrase patterns
| UA | Translit | EN | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Я в готелі. | ya v hoteli | I am in the hotel. | Static location after в calls for locative, not accusative motion. |
| Ми в ресторані. | my v restorani | We are in the restaurant. | This is another high-frequency place pattern where the noun changes after the preposition. |
| Книга на столі. | knyha na stoli | The book is on the table. | на plus locative marks position on a surface. |
| По телефону. | po telefonu | On the phone. | The locative also appears in a few fixed communication bundles like this one. |
| , Андрію! | pryvit, Andriiu | Hi, Andriy! | Андрій shifts to vocative because you are speaking to him directly. |
| , пане лікарю! | dobryi den, pane likariu | Good day, doctor. | Titles and professions can stack in vocative too, especially in polite address. |
Common mix-ups
- Do not confuse в готелі with в готель. One is location, the other is motion.
- Do not use the locative without a preposition. That is one of the clearest rules in the case system.
- Do not assume every locative noun ends in -і. Common place words like парк often use -у.
- Do not leave names and titles in nominative when you are directly addressing someone and a common vocative form is available.
Quick drill
- Compare Я в готелі. with Я йду в готель. so location and motion stop blending together.
- Say Книга на столі. and По телефону. as two fixed locative patterns.
- Read , Андрію! and , пане лікарю! to hear casual and polite direct address.
- Use the next Mova session to notice one place phrase after в / у or на and one vocative-style greeting before moving on.
The locative and vocative feel less strange once you hear that they solve two very concrete jobs: placing things and calling people. Open Mova and practice one location pattern and one address pattern until both start sounding normal in real speech.
