The cultural context

What to notice

The year begins with січень, followed by лютий and березень. Spring brings квітень and травень; summer червень, липень, and серпень; autumn вересень, жовтень, and листопад; winter returns with грудень.

Several links are visible to a learner: квіти—flowers—in квітень; трава—grass—in травень; липа—linden—in липень; листя падає—leaves fall—in листопад.

Other names have older or debated associations, such as work, frost, plants, or ground conditions. Present a popular origin as “the name is associated with…” rather than claiming one uncontested derivation.

The dictionary form names the month, but time phrases change it: у липні—“in July”; 24 серпня—“August 24.” This makes month vocabulary a bridge to the locative and genitive cases.
