Ask which Christmas date the family keeps

The calendar question is recent and still lived differently. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church adopted the revised calendar for fixed feasts in 2023, while some parishes, denominations, and families retain January 7 or observe both dates in some way.

Святвечір—Holy Evening—is the evening before Christmas in the calendar a family follows. A family may gather for a fasting meal, wait for the first star, serve кутя or узвар, pray, remember relatives, or follow a much simpler routine.

Колядувати means to sing Christmas carols, колядки. Vertep nativity theater, didukh, festive breads, church services, and visits appear in some communities, with strong regional and family variation.

A religious greeting is Христос народився! with the response Славімо Його! It belongs in an appropriate Christmas and Christian context, not as a universal greeting for every Ukrainian.
