The cultural context

What to notice

Shevchenko was born into serfdom and later purchased out of it with support from artists and patrons. He trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and developed a professional visual-art practice.

His poetry helped establish modern Ukrainian literature as a major cultural force. The collection title Кобзар became so closely associated with him that Shevchenko himself is often called the Kobzar.

The Russian imperial authorities arrested and exiled him for participation in the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius and for politically challenging writing. During exile, restrictions were placed on his writing and drawing.

Today his image is not one fixed icon. Artists, activists, students, diaspora communities, musicians, and readers reinterpret Shevchenko—sometimes solemnly, sometimes critically, and sometimes through popular culture.
