Family words show exactly how people connect
Start with broad family words, then add precise relationships when they help
What to notice
Сім’я commonly names a family or household unit, while родина often reaches toward a wider family or kin network. Родичі means relatives. The boundaries are not mathematical: speakers, regions, and contexts may overlap the first two words, so examples are more useful than a rigid one-to-one chart.
Ukrainian also names generations directly: онук and онука are grandson and granddaughter; прабабуся and прадідусь are great-grandmother and great-grandfather. Relationship-by-marriage vocabulary can become even more precise, but it is better introduced gradually than presented as an A1 memorization wall.
A visual family tree should be inclusive. Learners may describe single-parent, blended, adoptive, foster, same-sex, chosen, multigenerational, long-distance, or bereaved families. The vocabulary serves the people; it does not define which structure is legitimate.
The most natural entry point is a photograph or story. Хто це на фото? invites the speaker to choose the relevant relationship word. Це моя родина allows the learner to present a group without listing every connection at once.
