Count the stems before you celebrate

Odd numbers for joyful occasions; even numbers for mourning

The cultural context

What to notice

A birthday bouquet might contain three, five, seven, or another odd number of stems. A florist in Ukraine will normally recognize the convention and can help assemble an appropriate bouquet.

Even-number bouquets—two, four, six, and so on—carry a mourning association in this cultural context. Accidentally giving six roses for a birthday can therefore feel jarring even when the intention is kind.

The count is clearest with a small bouquet of individual stems. Large mixed arrangements, branches, filler flowers, or florist-designed compositions may not be experienced as a simple arithmetic count in the same way.

The convention is strong and useful for learners, but flowers are also personal: allergies, fragrance, hospital restrictions, pets, and the recipient’s taste matter.
