Family & relationships

The relationship is built into the word

Traditional kinship terms can be precise; neutral descriptive phrases can be clearer

Phrase for the momentЦе мама мого чоловіка.This is my husband’s mother.
The cultural context

What to notice

Теща is a wife’s mother from the husband’s point of view, while свекруха is a husband’s mother from the wife’s point of view. Тесть and свекор distinguish the corresponding fathers. The English umbrella “mother-in-law” hides information that the Ukrainian word includes.

Зять and невістка also name relationships by marriage, but family usage and perspective can become complicated. Learners should see each word on a relationship diagram with an arrow showing who is speaking, rather than memorizing a flat bilingual list.

Traditional in-law vocabulary appears in humor and stereotypes, especially around mothers-in-law. The app should not recycle those jokes as cultural truth. They can teach the learner prejudice more efficiently than vocabulary.

Neutral analytic phrases remain extremely useful: мама мого чоловіка, мама моєї дружини, чоловік моєї доньки. These forms take longer but make the relationship transparent and allow a learner to speak before mastering every traditional term.

Try it in context

A woman is speaking about her husband’s mother. Which traditional term matches that relationship?
