Shoes and slippers during a home visit
What to notice
Many Ukrainian households treat the entrance area as the boundary between the outdoors and the clean living space. Rain, snow, mud, dust, and street debris can be carried inside on outdoor shoes, so guests commonly leave them near the door.
A host may offer капці, indoor slippers kept for guests. Offering slippers can be a small act of hospitality as well as a practical household routine.
This practice is common, but it is not universal. Some hosts may tell guests to keep their shoes on, especially during a brief visit, a large gathering, or when they have a different household routine.
The most culturally competent response is not to memorize an absolute rule. Pause, notice what the host does, and ask politely.
