The cultural context

What to notice

A godmother may be called хрещена мама or хрещена, and a godfather хрещений тато or хрещений. Their godchild is a хрещеник or хрещениця.

Кум and кума describe adults connected through godparenthood. Depending on who is speaking, the terms can refer to a child’s godfather or godmother and to the relationship among the parents and godparents.

Historically and in practicing Christian families, the role may include baptism, religious guidance, holiday contact, gifts, or ongoing family support. What the title means in daily life differs greatly.

Not every Ukrainian is Christian, baptized, religious, or connected to godparents. Teach the vocabulary as a relationship system, not as a required part of Ukrainian identity.
