The cultural context

What to notice

The State Flag of Ukraine is blue and yellow. The colors appeared in earlier regional and national movements and became state colors during twentieth-century independence efforts before being restored for independent Ukraine.

The Tryzub—“trident”—is the small State Coat of Arms. Its design is based on the princely sign associated with Volodymyr the Great and the medieval polity centered in Kyiv.

A popular explanation sees blue sky above golden wheat in the flag. It is a memorable contemporary image, but it should be labeled as a popular interpretation rather than the complete legal or historical definition.

Since independence and especially during resistance to Russian aggression, both symbols have appeared in public demonstrations, military and civic contexts, diaspora support, memorials, art, clothing, and everyday expressions of belonging.
