The cultural context

What to notice

Ukrainian cities may use buses, trams, trolleybuses, metro systems, suburban trains, and маршрутки—route minibuses. The mix and the words learners hear depend on the city.

Before boarding, ask whether the vehicle goes to your destination: Цей автобус їде до вокзалу? Once aboard, you can ask where to get off or where to transfer.

On some smaller vehicles, a passenger may say На наступній, будь ласка—“At the next stop, please.” On systems with automatic stops and doors, this phrase may be unnecessary.

Avoid teaching one city’s fare practice as Ukrainian culture. Payment may use a transit card, app, contactless bank card, paper ticket, validator, conductor, driver, or another local system.
