One phrase does several polite jobs
Position, response, and intonation decide whether it means please, you’re welcome, or go ahead
What to notice
In Будь ласка, допоможіть, the phrase softens a request: “Please help.” Its position before or after the request can vary, but the request itself makes the function clear.
In Дякую. — Будь ласка, it responds to thanks: “You’re welcome.” Nothing in the Ukrainian words changes; the previous turn in the conversation supplies the meaning.
In Можна? — Будь ласка, the phrase grants permission or invites the other person to proceed: “May I?” — “Go ahead.” A shop worker may also say будь ласка while handing over an item, closer to “here you are.”
Intonation and gesture help, but learners do not need an abstract pragmatics lecture before using the phrase. Three short scenes and repeated audio make the functions visible. The app should preserve one phrase record while tagging each usage by conversational job.
