A small gift says, “I value the invitation”
Bring a gesture, not a test of generosity
What to notice
For a planned visit, guests may bring chocolates, pastries, fruit, flowers, a drink, or a small item for children. What feels appropriate depends on closeness, occasion, household preferences, and dietary or religious needs.
The useful sentence is simple: Це вам. Дякую за запрошення—“This is for you. Thank you for the invitation.” A host may respond Не треба було—literally, “You did not need to”—while still appreciating the gesture.
A very short visit, casual drop-in, reciprocal family routine, or difficult financial situation may involve no gift at all. Showing up on time, communicating changes, and thanking the host also express respect.
Avoid using price as the measure of cultural correctness. An expensive gift can create discomfort, while a small, thoughtful item can fit the relationship well.
